California Window Tint Law: 2026 Complete Guide
Learn what window tint percentages are legal in California for front side windows, rear windows, windshields, and medical exemptions.
California vehicle code (CVC 26708) governs window tinting darkness and reflectivity across the state.
### Key Legal Tint Limits in California:
- **Windshield:** Top 4 inches allowed with transparent non-reflective tint. Full windshield clear ceramic (e.g. LLumar AIR80) is permitted for heat rejection.
- **Front Side Windows:** Must allow at least 70% of light in (70% VLT) when combined with factory glass.
- **Rear Side Windows:** Any darkness (VLT%) is allowed (5%, 15%, 20%, 35%, etc.) as long as the vehicle has dual side mirrors.
- **Rear Windshield:** Any darkness level is allowed with dual side mirrors.
### Refectivity & Color Regulations:
- No amber, red, or blue tinted films are allowed on any windows.
- Front side window tint cannot be more reflective than standard glass.
